CHILBLAINS.

Chilblains are caused by the skin's abnormal reaction to cold and are particularly prevalent in people who suffer from poor circulation and can occur at any age.

Chilblains are small, itchy and painful red swellings on the skin they appear mostly on the toes, heels and lower leg. They may be single or multiple and usually subside in two to three weeks but sometimes the reaction is more intense causing the skin to ulcerate.

To avoid chilblains, keeping the feet warm and dry, wearing warm socks and using thermal insoles are by far the best preventative measures. Once they appear the skin will be itchy but it is important not to scratch as the skin may become broken and infected. Should the chilblains become broken, apply sterile dressings and massage the skin daily with a good foot cream which helps to maintain a healthy circulation.

If there is a question of diabetes or severe vascular problems, referral to a State Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist or family doctor is recommended.
