CORNS AND CALLOUS.

Corns and callous are the most common conditions on the skin of the foot, they can occur anywhere in the feet but are usually located over bony prominences. Excessive pressure and sheering stress over bony prominences cause the outer layer of the skin to thicken forming corns and callous. These conditions are usually painful but with conservative care can be managed effectively.

Certainly the first line of defense for this condition is good supporting shoes which have a wide toe box and a low heel. If corns and callous persist then professional treatment by a State Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist is indicated. If the condition is painful enough and non-responsive to topical medications and debridement, then surgical correction is indicated.

Other useful treatments for corns and callous are items such as reusable gel pads and adhesive paddings as well as orthotics (a device to redistribute the weight more evenly over the sole of the foot). In conjunction with protective paddings, daily use of a good foot cream with periodical gentle use of a foot dresser will help to keep the skin soft and elastic.

If there is a question of diabetes or vascular problems, referral to a State Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist or family doctor is recommended.
